Advantages of mechanically fixed solar installations using the ROOFTRAK® IFP

The ROOFTRAK® IFP system has been developed specifically around the challenging scenario of providing a connection to the building structure whilst maintaining 100% integrity of the weathering membrane.

The ROOFTRAK IFP is manufactured using three main components;

10 benefits of using the ROOFTRAK® IFP – intergated fixing point system
1. Waterproof connection

Patented, time proven and completely waterproof seal between the membrane flange and the top connection part.

This is a factory process and ensures a completely waterproof seal is achieved for every unit.

The seal does not rely on perishable or degradable elements that might be subject to deterioration over time.

There are no threaded elements or bolts that bypass the waterproofing line.

‘Independent waterproofness testing under load by the BRE’.

2. Fast on-site waterproofing

The on-site waterproofing becomes a standard lap joint, the same as any other lap joint on the roof.

Quick and simple to install.

Laps are completed in accordance with the manufacturers guidelines.

‘No tricky detailing, mastic sealant, or welding to a 3rd party plastic coating’.

3. Direct connection to the structure – no damage to the membrane

Fixings are directly connected to the structure meaning that all uplift (tensile) loads are transferred to the structure.

  • No tensile loads are borne by the membrane. This can cause membranes to tear.
  • No tensile loads are transferred through the insulation. This can cause insulation to delaminate, meaning loss of integrity.

Thermally broken fixings means roof U-values are retained.

4. Mechanical fixings – no ballast required

By using mechanically fixed IFPs, ballast loading for solar PV arrays is not required.

  • Enables application of solar on weaker roof structures
  • Enable solar PV to be used on high buildings
  • Enables solar PV to be installed on more compressible insulations.
  • Reduces compression of insulation

‘One IFP fixing point can give up to 5kN (500kg load) of tensile resistance* but weighs only 3kgs approx’. Independently tested by the BRE.

5. Installation on any roof pitch

IFP fixing points are connected directly to the structure, installation can be on any roof pitch or even vertically.

Shear loads can be applied up to 2.5kN even on a warm roof construction*.

*‘Independently tested by the BRE with 200mm rigid insulation’

6. Universal – can be used with virtually all solar rail systems

The IFP utilises an M10 threaded receptor. Any solar rail support system can be bolted to the IFP.

Many brands of solar rail support system utilise the IFP as a direct connection to the structure.

7. Helps solar installations comply with RC62

Our IFP provides a direct connection to the structure in line with advice set out in Fire Protection Association – Fire Advisory RISC Authority Document RC62.

5.4.12  ‘Panels should be securely fixed using suitable mounting systems that are securely fastened to the supporting structure. Panels should not be held in place by ballast

8. Can be fitted retrospectively

The IFP can be fitted along with the roof installation or retrospectively.

Where the connection is made to the structural deck (plywood / steel / concrete) the IFPs can be located anywhere and do not need to be positioned over structural element.

9. Highly compatible

The IFP is compatible with all membranes, cold roof & warm roof constructions, bonded or mechanically fixed membranes.

10. Peace of mind

The IFP gives peace of mind knowing that the installation is;

  • Manufactured in the UK using quality assured materials
  • Waterproof
  • Very secure
  • Thermally efficient
  • Tested
  • Warranted
  • Fully compatible
  • Fast to install
  • Readily available
